This week in Canterbury....
Local Days Out
By Sarah Wathan
Everyone knows that keeping children entertained, especially on a budget, can be difficult. For this edition of Local Days Out, I’ve gone in search of the hidden activities that both keep kids entertained and suit the pocket:
- Espressions Café in Palace Street Canterbury is an interactive art café where you can literally, turn up and paint, whatever your age, skill or confidence level and they will look after the mess. Amongst all the paintable keepsake options and great gift ideas is a new range of seasonal items such as baubles, the larger of which are perfect for capturing a child’s hand print. www.espression.co.uk
- Mother and Toddler Groups are often overlooked as just a room full of toys, however many parents are now finding them to be a great social group opportunity with a safe play environment for many different ages. Amongst the various groups available in the Canterbury area, I’ve picked a couple of the most popular:
- Tumble Tots offer a room of interesting soft-play obstacle courses for pre-school age; popularity shown through the fact that local groups are quickly booking up. See http://www.tumbletots.com/Canterbury/ for further details of a group near you.
- Likewise, Baby Ballet is gaining a lot of attention for its fun, ballet-skills based classes which in Canterbury are available for ages 18 months to 4 years. The group fuses music and singing with basic ballet to allow self-expression, improve balance and improve confidence. www.babyballet.co.uk
- Further afield, the Canterbury Archaeological Trust are organising several children’s activity days as part of a 3-year Folkestone project called “a town unearthed”. At their recent “Hands on Archaeology for Kids”, a FREE drop-in workshop, I found out that many of the events going on are getting both children and adults enthusiastically involved, particularly the “mini digs”. Such events are showing that you’re never too young. Find out about future events at www.canterburytrust.co.uk.
See you soon x
